About the mushroom:
New York State is considering legislation that would create an official New York State fungus. Lactarius peckii – also known as “Peck’s Milky” – is found throughout New York State.  It is mycorrhizal, forming symbiotic relationships with oak trees. The tree provides carbohydrates from photosynthesis to the mushroom mycelium, and the mycelium provides essential nutrients and increases water absorption into the tree.  Lactarius peckii is an indicator of forest health.
